This is I believe my fourth attempt to grow the Old Rose 'Lamarque' but this time in more hospitable conditions.....California rosarians have told that for them it can almost swallow a home, plus is a good hip setter. I'm not usually a fan of white roses, but I love the pale lemon yellow glow in the center of each newly opened bloom. Hopefully, THIS time this climber will flourish and I'll have to add more rebars so it can shade the west wall of my home.

Roses in bloom today.....Don Juan, Lamarque, Crepuscule, Reve d'Or, Graham Thomas, "Maggie", "Spice", Perle d'Or, Duchesse de Brabant, Mrs. B. R. Cant, Iceberg, Louise Odier, Cl. Cramoisi Superieur, Marechal Neil, "Barfield White Climber", Ducher, Francois Juranville, Teasing Georgia, Safrano, Arethusa, Cherokee Rose, Champney's Pink, Baronne Prevost.

The south side of "Barfield White Climber" is really kicking in now. The potent anise-fennel perfume of nearly opened pale pink buds teased open in the morning with a pinky is startling as it usually occurs in the old cold climate European 'Ayrshire Roses' and in many of David Austin's roses. This mystery rose is 99.9999% prickle free, incredibly vigorous and pest and disease free, obviously immune to nematodes and eight years of drought, and repeat blooms. Sadly, despite MANY MANY pollinations on it and using it as "Dad" I got no viable seedlings of merit. My goal is to breed, in essence, a cheery yellow version of it.

I should have 1-2 plants of the 'Cherokee Rose' (Rosa laevigata) to share if someone has the room for this GIANT MONSTER CLIMBER WITH THORNS OF DEATH that proved to be as useless as a breeder to me as did Rosa bracteata. I've seen this rose reach the top of 60 foot tall pine trees in Odessa. I tried it as both Mom and Dad and got no viable seedlings despite MANY pollinations using it. A shame as it is immune to all rose diseases AND root knot nematodes. It literally kept me away from the west side of my home for over two years. The scent comes from the stamens vs. the petals....some feel it smell like pineapple, but a high school era friend says it smells like the bug spray Raid. VERY difficult to keep in check.

Thank you Donna Massari Bevis for thinking to call me from Sam's Club to ask if I wanted an 'Oklahoma' rose.....then bringing me TWO husky ones! These will get potted up to use as pollen parents in my newly re-christened rose breeding program aimed at creating roses that will thrive own root and with no sprays in Florida's now perennial drought.

What a joy....the first bloom of the year from my Fairmount Cemetery rose "Jo An's Pink Perpetual" that years ago Fred Boutin and I, after he visited the original in Denver, felt might be 'Champion of The World'. Astonishing perfume!

First bloom of the year from the Mystery Rose "Moroccan Rose" that years ago Mike Shoup gave me to trial here in Tampa. It too grows in a large Water Wise Container Garden in response to the perennial drought. Some feel it is a Portland Rose, but here it is a once-bloomer. The scent reminds me of that of a Centifolia but with a touch of Tea rose.

This gem has been here at least four years now, own root and organically grown.
